About

Hi, I’m Sanyam Shah (Sanyam Paresh Shah), an incoming PhD student in Bioinformatics and Genomics at Penn State University.

My research interests lie at the intersection of genomics, machine learning, and computational biology. As an undergraduate at Arizona State University, I worked on projects spanning healthcare informatics, metabolic syndrome prediction, Oxford Nanopore sequencing, metagenomics, and digital health interventions. I have authored first-author publications in computational health prediction and healthcare informatics and contributed to research in genomics and bioinformatics.

Broadly, I am interested in developing computational and statistical methods that help us better understand the genetic and molecular mechanisms underlying human health and disease.

Outside of research, I am passionate about writing. I am the author of Bioinformatics, a poetry collection inspired by genomics, proteomics, and computational biology. My poems have appeared in literary journals including Canyon Voices and ChART. I am also working on a literary fiction novel, Sfumato: A Tragedy, which explores themes of identity, loneliness, meaning, depression, and human connection.

Although science and literature often seem like separate worlds, I have always been drawn to both. Whether through data analysis or storytelling, I am interested in understanding people: how we function biologically, how we experience the world emotionally, and how we make meaning from both.

Beyond research, I care deeply about mental health awareness, peer support, and science communication. Through volunteer work, writing, and mentorship, I hope to contribute to a culture where people feel more understood, connected, and supported.

This website serves as a home for my research, publications, writing, teaching, and other projects.

To read about my scientic poetry; Bioinformatics: A Poetry Collection through which I aim to bridge the gap between science and poetry by tranlating the research we do in varioud fields of bioinformatics into poetry, you can find my profile here: “Biomedical Informatics and Data Science graduate humanizes scientific concepts through poetry”
